Zerg Micro Skills
When discussing Zerg micro, we are talking about controlling individual soldiers in battle. If you are just beginning, it is more important to perfect Zerg macro game play before attempting to micro. The Zerg have numerous cheap units and are really good at building additional ones, so occupying yourself with specific troops is not a good tactic unless you’re able to do so while expertly handling your economy, resource collection, and troop production at the same time. Nonetheless, when you are an expert at macro there are some very effective Zerg micro strategies that will help you significantly in battle.
Zerg Micro Skill – Introduction
Because the Zerg create such specialized troops, scouting your opponent is important when deciding on your strategy. The Zerg should generally try to discover smaller groups of enemy units and then try to overwhelm them with a massive attack. Be certain to utilize the right units to attack the enemy, because Zerg units are so specialized.
Zerg Micro Tactic – Burrowed Roaches
This technique is good for a little later in the battle, once you’ve teched up to Burrowing. It also works best when your opposition doesn’t have a lot of Detectors. At an expense of 100 gas and 100 Minerals, Burrowing is one of the best technologies to get. Early battle Burrowed Roaches are really challenging for your enemy to detect, and will provide you with a huge advantage in battle.
Quickly and stealthily use your Roaches to eliminate enemy troops one at a time. Make sure to burrow your Roaches when enemy troops attack, so they can go undercover, and then pop back up when the attack is complete. Roaches will also recover ten hp each second when burrowed, so when you pop up to attack they’ll be at full health. This tactic will do a lot of damage with virtually no loss of resources if done correctly.
Zerg Micro Strategy – Mutalisk Decoy
Have the Mutalisks you make circulating continuously to distract your opponent. By moving them around, your opponent will not know how many you have and will be careful before attacking you. If you don’t have a lot of Mutalisks, this confusion tactic will get you time to tech up and create additional soldiers. Using this technique early in the game will allow you to reach the late game with a thriving economy. If you can get to the 12 minute mark with good resource collection and a minimum of 3 Hatcheries, you should have no difficulty overwhelming your enemy.
