With a wide variety of contestants in the running, the field was narrowed to a final two; an armadillo and a hedgehog. Obviously, the hedgehog won out and the rest, as they say, is a very storied and successful history. But even after he was selected as the winner, there would be much controversy over his appearance.
From its inception one of the complications of the gaming industry was how to appeal to the widely varying public. The original characters had a very Japanese style to them. They also had some interesting additions, like an all animal rock band and a lusty blond girlfriend. Japanese animation often uses Caucasian characters, and the women are always more obviously feminine than in American cartoons.
The creators in Japan were not pleased in any way and did not want to allow the changes to be made. After the North American team came to Japan and explained the cultural problems, they finally relented. It was a good decision, as the new version of the hedgehog with his spiked hair and power sneakers was welcomed with open arms.
The sonic game was built to play to the strength Sega had in speed, so while Mario the plumber was out saving princesses, the Hedgehog is out to thwart the evil Doctor Robotnik, who captures animals and uses them to build bad robots to take over the earth. Sonic is always there to keep him from completing his evil deeds.
The hedgehog has done very well competing with the plumber for Super Mario fame, and the have been competing head to head for more than a decade. The exception was the introduction to three dimensional gaming, an arena Nintendo was much better suited for than Sega. There is still hope however, because now that everyone can play sonic games online, the differences in the gaming platforms is narrowing once again.
