Know the Basics Before Buying A Starcraft 2 Strategy Guide

There are just about as many Starcraft 2 strategy guides out there as there are players. Some guides are written by players with advanced skills. Some others, meanwhile, are written by authors who don’t seem to even understand the game. Likewise, some guides will take you right up through the advanced stages of the game while others are just for the beginner. Either way, you are going to want to know the basics of Starcraft 2 before buying a guide.

In Starcraft 2 you play as one of three races of alien beings. Each race has its own distinct advantages, play style, and strategies. The secret is not learning which is best, because none of them are necessarily better than the other. Instead, the secret is to learn which you like to play best and will put in the time to learn about. The three races are Humans called Terrans. A wise and enlightened race with high technology is called the Protoss. Then there are the evil insect like Zerg.

Terran offer a nice mix of units and abilities that makes them the most versatile of the three races. And thanks to abilities like Radar, you can see what your opponent is doing so you can plan you strategy accordingly. Some fun units include the flame throwers and siege tanks. Since you already played this race in single player campaign, you should be pretty familiar with them already. Many Starcraft 2 strategies guides recommend you start with Terran.

Next up are the evil Zerg, who are an insect like race. Like the Borg from Star Trek, the Zerg don’t really have a mind of their own, instead reallying on the directives of their all seeing leader. This doesn’t really matter for you as the player. All you need to know is the Zerg are really fast at unit creation. This is where the term Zerg Rush came from. From creating multiple units quickly to having the ability to literally tunnel into your opponents base, the Zerg offer the offensive player quite a lot of options. Defense is good too.

The eldest of the three races, the Protoss are both wise and powerful. They have advanced technology that they have combined with their latent psyonic abilities. The result is a powerful aresenal of mechanized and organic units that have abilities such as warping, invisibility, area effect damage, and more. The Protoss have a bit of a learning curve to them due to their slower production time and technology trees, as a result many players of Protoss are seasoned veterans. But do not let this stop you from trying them out and seeing if you like them.

Now that you know about the three races, you need to know how you go about growing your army. In Starcraft 2 your army needs two essential resources for production of units; crystal minerals and vespene gas. You harvest these with the collector unit of each of the races, basically the worker units of the army. These resources are always conveniently located right next to your base at the start of each game. Additional resource nodes can be found elsewhere on the map, though you may need to fight your opponent to get to them or keep them.

Resources are a major aspect of the game, they determine who wins and who losses. Manage them poorly and you will find yourself at the mercy of your opponent with nothing to defend against.
