What is Involved in Making the Best Driving Game?

As a veteran online car racer, I’m often asked what goes into making a great driving game? This is not such an easy question to answer, but I think the answer includes the following items:

First and foremost, the most important element that goes into the making of a great sim is the physics model. There’s not much that aggravates me more than a car that doesn’t drive on the circuit the way my mind is expecting. In years gone by, this was a much larger problem than it is now, but you may still find a couple of computer game publishers that put far more effort into eye candy than they do into the physics model. Shame on them!

That being said, a great driving experience that isn’t visually appealing, will likely be a total stinker. With the advances in graphics and hardware that we’ve had in the last several years, there isn’t any excuse for publishing a visually disappointing game. Thankfully, terrible graphics are essentially non-existent now and today’s sim racer is blessed with some of the most incredible eye candy ever. Bravo.

So now the car handles, and it looks gorgeous, but what does it sound like? Unlike the real world cockpit, the feedback provided to the online racer is far more limited. Sights and sounds, coupled with force feedback, are the only feedback mechanisms which exist. Thankfully, the technology required to recreate a remarkable array of sounds has kept up with the physics engine and the eye candy, and today’s games, most often do a masterful job of recreating an exceptional auditory experience that enables the driver to fully immerse himself into the game. Doubt this? Just try playing your preferred game with the sound turned off. You will have no idea what the car is doing, much less how fast you are going, or when you should brake. Sound is essential!
