What is Going To Make a Very Good Driving Game?
In my previous post, I referred to some of the things that are part of a great racing sim. These things include; a life-like experience of driving into and out of the garage, a physics engine that properly models the real life driving experience, plus a pit strategy and execution engine that allows for good and bad pit stops to take place.
As important as these three things are, they aren’t the only three factors that are required. Additionally, a fantastic car driving game needs to include the following:
A fully equipped garage that permits the sim racer to effectively recreate the experience of changing the car’s chassis to alter its handling. In the real world race cars have many ways to alter how the car drives. You can adjust springs, shocks, sway bars, ride heights, caster, camber, stagger, transmission ratios, and a great deal more. Take away this adjustability in the sim racer’s garage, and you are effectively reducing the realism of the game. Obviously, this is a big no no!
Today’s PC racing game also needs to provide an excellent online driving experience – and that includes getting into and out of the pits. In older racing games, most drivers would just play against the computer’s artificial intelligence. Those days are long gone. The name of the game nowadays is racing head to head against other racers on the internet. Just like other aspects of the game, the online experience has also made massive improvements, thanks largely to technology and improved broadband to the home.
That being said, an incredible driving experience that isn’t visually pleasing, is going to be a complete dud. With the developments in graphics and hardware that we’ve enjoyed during the last couple of years, there is absolutely no excuse for publishing an ugly game. Thankfully, poor graphics are pretty much a thing of the past and today’s online racer is blessed with some of the best eye candy ever. Bravo.
