Video Game Tester Jobs: What You Need To Land That Job

I know, you’re ready for some big fat checks from video game testing jobs. I can see you now whipping the pants off your hommies. But getting a job isn’t all fun and games. There is some real thought that has to go into this. Though your opponent on the screen doesn’t hurt when they slam you…I guarantee you, you’ll feel it when they say you don’t get the job.

If you want to land on your feet and get that job, there are some things you need to consider. Actually, there are a number of things you need to think about. But I don’t have enough room to give all the details here. At the end of this article, I suggest you check out the other resources.

Now let’s get down to business. You’ve probably heard the term skill-set bantered around. As you know, every job has necessary skills. We’re going to examine four essential aptitudes for a game testing position.

A good place to start is determining what you know about game development. Obviously this isn’t at the front of your mind when your flipping the knobs on your game controller. However, it would be to your advantage to start familiarizing yourself with what this is all about. It certainly will be something your interviewer will be concerned about.

Another thing to consider is your education. Education spells skill development. Now I’m not saying you have to go to college. It really depends on what your end goal is. But there is a bigger universe than being a game tester. You might want to get into game development. And it is at that point that skill delivery through education becomes more vital.

How are your analytical skills? This is a third area you need to consider. Sure, it takes some critical thinking skills when you play those games. But I’m now talking about shifting into a critiquing and trouble shooting mode. You’re going to have to shift your focus from beating your opponent to seeing the game play issues.

Finally, you will need excellent communication skills. Now you’ll be working with a team. And they will have a process to evaluate every aspect of the game. But then it will be your job to follow their problem solving process and communicate that clearly to the appropriate people.

Take these four skill-sets and evaluate yourself. Where do you stand with each of them? Begin to work on those areas you might be weak in. Don’t get too hung up on this. But do seriously consider how you might improve upon any of these skills. And then get out there and start applying.
