Useful PC Gaming Terms
Those who are new to the world of PC gaming will probably find some of the terms that are used quite confusing. But it won’t take you long to start using some of these terms yourself as they will be picked up quite easily. And when it comes to PC gaming the terms below are some of the most common terms you will hear.
Graphics Processing Unit (CPU)~Graphics Processing Unit (CPU)~Graphics Processing Unit (CPU). The graphics processing unit is the chip on a gaming card where the images are produced. The quality of the images that you see in your games will be determined by the type of CPU that you have.
Texture Mapping. You are almost certain to have observed texture mapping but you may not have known what it was called. This is the ability to make an object look 3D; something that is important for those modern games we enjoy. Not a lot of computer processing power is required for this but a bitmap image can produce very convincing images.
Frame Rate. The illusion of movement which is created when images appear on your screen at speed is known as the frame rate. Sixty frames per second is the normal amount for a really good quality game these days. A game will not have that flow of movement if the frame rate is below thirty frames per second.
Artifact. Anything which pops up on the computer screen in the middle of a game which shouldn’t be there is known as an artifact. The reason these appear is because your CPU is not able to cope with the demands that are being put on it. Other reasons for this could be that your computer drivers have a problem or that there is a virus on your computer which is causing it to slow down.
Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)~Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)~Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP). An AGP is where you connect the graphics card that allows you to play PC games. Most modern PCs no longer have a AGP but your computer still might.
