Rules And Information Concerning Baccarat

Baccarat is a card game commonly played in casinos and online. It is a fairly simple game, and very popular due to the fact that is has a very low house advantage. Big Table Baccarat often attracts high-rollers, and exudes the type of haughty atmosphere one would expect from wealthy players at a casino table. Millions of dollars can be won or lost in a single night. Mini-Baccarat usually has lower minimums and is played at a smaller table that looks a lot like a Blackjack table.

At the beginning of the game, a player from the Baccarat table is deemed the “banker” and he begins the deal. Wagers rotate clockwise around the table, and the players are known as “punters”, in game terminology. The player who is considered the banker places the first bet. Players are then asked, in the round table fashion, to match the banker’s bet. Only one player may accept, thus “going bank.” If no one accepts, then players are allowed to make their own arbitrary wagers. The bank must be at least equal to the total wagers – if it is not, the banker can opt to boost the bank’s pot, or the latest wagers will have to be removed from the table, last bets going first.

The number of decks in Baccarat depends on the version of the game being played, but eight is the most common. One at a time, cards are dealt to players, face-down. There are three possible winning scenarios in Baccarat – banker, player, or tie. Players can bet on any of these choices, or any combinations thereof. Cards 2-9 are worth face value, aces just a point, and the tens, jacks, queens, and kings have no value. As cards are added to a hand, any values over ten are automatically discarded. For example, a seven and a nine have a value of 16-10 = 6. Hands can be valued at 0-9 points, and the highest-valued hand indicates the winning outcome. Ties happen when both the banker and the player have the same value in their hands. In order to cash in on this situation, you have to actually place a wager on “tie.”

Due to its lower probability of occurring, the tie option has the lowest odds, and therefore, the highest payout. Correct banker or player wagers only pay 1:1, but a tie pays at 8-1. In Baccarat, the house has a relatively low advantage over the players, only about 1%-1.5%. Some game versions have a 5% commission taken by the banker for any wagers placed on his behalf.

In addition, there are a myriad of rules that explicitly state when the banker and players hit and when they stand. They require a separate chart which is not included here. The Baccarat premise is very simple, but there are a plethora of rules that must be remembered and followed. Add to that a few variations on house rules, and the once simple game can seem a great deal more complicated until you get the hang of it.
