The Only Reason Why As A Child I Loved Saturdays Was Always The Saturday Cartoons
There are plenty of reasons that most kids love Saturdays. Children love Saturdays since it means they don’t have to get up early and attend school. Kids love Saturdays because they usually get to relax or play with friends. Children love Saturdays since it means they got to stay up late on Friday night. But as a youngster I loved Saturdays for a totally different motive: Saturday toons.
One of the highlights of my years as a child was watching Saturday morning cartoons. My own siblings and I anticipated Saturday all week long. We managed to get through five long days of school, homework, going to sleep early, and eating a healthy diet of breakfast foods in order to get to the next Saturday. And though the awaiting Saturday felt like forever, eventually it always came. With it came our special Saturday routine.
Despite the fact that Saturday may be the perfect day to sleep late, we usually got up just as soon as we did for school, and we did not even need an alarm! Whoever woke up first would run to awaken all of the others and together we’d go quickly to the living room and turn on the television and flip to the favorite channel: the one with the best Saturday morning cartoons.
Oh, we loved our cartoons. We kept track of that which was happening in all our favorite cartoons and we waited with anticipation for the next episode. We were glued to the television with eyes so huge we didn’t miss a thing. We would laugh outloud, talk to the favorite cartoon characters outloud, and get mad at the television outloud anytime the cartoons didn’t go like we thought they should. I was so into our favorite cartoons that only one thing could pull us from the tube. That would be Dad’s pancakes.
Father’s special, Saturday-only hotcakes were amazing. We could eat as much as we wanted and we could put anything inside them we wanted: blueberries, choc chips or even M&M’s. We looked forward to our Dad’s pancakes almost as much as we anticipated watching our favorite cartoons. Our mother and father even began letting us eat our pancakes while watching tv so we would not need to miss a cartoon! Such a deal! Saturday was the only real day the good cartoons were on, it was the only real day that Dad made his signature, unhealthy pancakes, and it was definitely the only real day we could eat while watching television in the living room.
Consequently whilst I liked not having to go to school on Saturdays and I loved having the ability to have fun with friends and stay up later, the real reason I loved Saturdays wasn’t even my Dad’s great pancakes. The actual reason, the actual biggest reason that I grew up loving Saturdays was simple: Saturday morning toons.
