The Online music Revolution

Everyone has at some point in their lives wanted to be a rock star. We have all spent hours in front of a mirror holding a hairbrush in his mouth and lip sync with our favorite songs. And the popularity of reality shows in recent years, all I think they have what they need is a rock star.

But it is mostly the glamor of stardom that attracts people. And when it comes down to it, talent is the only thing that can go the distance. But behind the glamor most rock star wannabe’s have no idea how difficult it is to make it in the music industry.

With bollywood being the mainstream of music in India, it is very difficult for musicians who play other genres to get noticed. Pop music had the potential to be a massive industry. In the 90′s a lot of artists like ‘Alisha Chinai’, ‘Sonu Nigam’, ‘The Colonial Cousins’ and many more were quite famous. But eventually these musicians had to turn to bollywood to continue with their careers.

When the future of the music industry seems so dark for pop music, then one wonders what the alternative scenario of genres. Many groups in India have been playing rock, blues, metal and other genres of the past two decades or more. But until recently, only play for a niche audience.

Original music was also not as accepted until a few years ago, so even if these bands had a unique sound, it was difficult for them to bring it to the masses. There was a massive need for entrepreneurs to step up and change the music industry.

A few years ago, insiders form the music scene got together to start an independent label, they acted as agents as well as event managers. This started the ball rolling for independent music labels. Currently there are a number of companies and labels that help emerging bands to make their name in the music scene.

They do this through the hosting live shows and also fund the artists to produce their music albums as well as music videos.

It is popularly known as ‘Radiohead’, the UK has provided almost free to music fans, a few years ago. They put their album online and allowing fans to choose the price they were willing to pay. This caused a controversy within the industry that comes with music piracy and illegal downloading.

However more and more bands are realizing the worth of the online medium for distribution. Many local bands offer their songs for free online download. This somewhat acts as a marketing strategy as they can then attract larger audiences for their live shows through people who have already heard their music.

There are a lot of online platforms these days that offer support artists and musicians to connect with their fan base by uploading their music online. Some of these platforms have even partnered with 3D virtual worlds in order to connect to a larger fan base.
