The Best Sport Events of 2010
From the Winter Olympics to the World Cup 2010 was full of massive sporting moments. There are so many the question is where to begin. The logical answer would be the beginning and that is the biggest of them all. The World Cup.
Spain were the faves and reflected back from losing their opening match. They eventually won the cup after winning the EU Cup 2 years previously. The team that might never win now can’t stop.
It was not the best World Cup for everybody. It was good for Uruguay, New Zealand and Holland not so good for Greece or Italy. After the Italians and Greeks wished to get away from it all and the Greek Islands would’ve been a pleasant place to flee. If they went to one of the Greek Casinos, you would hope they’d more luck than what they went and did at the world cup.
A team who only just started to win are the New Orleans Saints who won the Superbowl. They defeated the Indianapolis Colts and in the midst Drew Brees became Sports Illustrated’s sportsman of the year.
The Lakers won the NBA crown while the San Francisco Giants ultimately won the World Series. They’d won as NY in 1954 although it was their first title since moving West to California. They took out the Phillies 4-1 in the world Series.
Talking of breaking droughts, Collingwood won their first AFL Premiership since 1990 and just their 2nd since 1954. Again they won in October because of the grand final being tied. The hapless St Kilda side have played 3 Grand Finals in 2 years and haven’t won one. They look for their first title since 1966.
The Australian cricket side are still becoming familiar with the retirement of Shane Warne. Life for them isn’t simple as it was once. Not only do they not dominate but they lose games.
Talking of no longer dominating, the same has occurred to Tiger Woods. He hasn’t got the presence or intimidation that he once did. He does not hold a single title and did not help the States side win the Ryder Cup. Instead Graeme McDowell and Martin Kaymer who both won majors in 2010 helped Europe win. McDowell’s putt on the 16th against Hunter Mahan was one of the high spots of the year.
Spain’s Rafael Nadal had a great year. He won three Grand Slam singles titles and just missed out on the Australian. If he wins it in 2011 he will hold all four Grand Slam titles at once. He now has nine Grand Slam single titles and more beckon.
In 2010, the right to host two World Cups was decided. 2018 went to Russia and 2022 went to Qatar. To claim they were both shocks is a little bit of an understatement. Many are annoyed with FIFA while others are unhappy. Hopefully sport on the field does not occur like this.
