Possibly There Is One Common Personality Sort With regard to Chess Players

You can’t really say that any one type of human temperament is predisposed to playing chess. This is because people who are different in many ways may have different reasons for wanting to play the game.

For one, retired citizens often become chess players. The game gives them something that is not physically straining to do and yet gives them the mental boost that, at their age, they are sorely in need of. Others will devote themselves to solving crossword puzzles or knitting jackets for their pets.

You also have the scholar chess players who love the game for its history and the theories on which the rules of the game are based. These are the sort of people who would write a book extolling the artistic way in which the game was created. They will probably own a fabulous chess set on which they repeatedly play famous chess routines. The movement of the pieces is like dance or music to them.

Similar to the scholars, but less theory-bound are the professional chess players. These people aspire to be grandmasters and are constantly striving to qualify for international chess matches. The motivation of such people for playing chess is obviously to win the game. They devote much of their free time to studying the ingenious moves of grandmasters of the past and also in devising their own unique styles of play.

For some people, chess is a way of relaxing after a tensed-up and overworked day. They are usually in a state of mental disturbance from all the irrational rushing back and forth in the office or store. Playing chess for these people is reminding themselves of the mental discipline that they miss in the workplace. They probably wish everyone of their peers were into playing chess as well.

Of the types of chess players an important one is the aficionado. He will usually be a mentally energetic, inquisitive and analytical individual. He loves challenges, especially problems for the mind. This type of person will be found dominating chess clubs and joining all kinds of local tournaments. Eventually, if he is skilled enough, you find him in an international chess competition on his way to becoming a grandmaster.

In recent times, educators have been encouraging young people in their teens to become chess players because the game has been discovered to have beneficial effects on the thinking process and the attitude of the young. These benefits enable young people to perform better in their academic activities as well as to become more sociable. In short, chess makes well rounded personalities. That opinion is encouraged and supported by internationally conducted scientific experiments which, although independent of each other, all came up with similar results establishing the benefits that can be derived playing the game

It is clear that playing chess is not a predisposition that belongs to any one personality type. You will see people with different temperaments, social/economic rankings, professions and ages playing chess habitually. This is because the game has many things to offer to people who know how to look for them in the game. Any good habit related to thinking properly and facing challenges can be learned by playing chess constantly.
