Flight Simulators: Three Common Flaws You Can Avoid
I’m a flying nut and I’m always looking for a way to log more time in my Cessna. If I’m not flying (a real plane) I spend most of my free time playing a flight simulator. By no means am I new to the world of simulators and I’ve bought my share of bad apples. I wrote this article to warn you of three common flaws in flight simulators and how you can avoid them.
So first, let me start off by saying that I’m a nut about airplanes and flying. I simply can’t get enough of it. I don’t have much time to fly, but when I do, I log serious hours flying or playing simulations. All of this helps me to prepare for my upcoming instrument rating examination.
I’m going to tell you a few things you should know before you buy your next flight simulator. First, finding a simulator that is very realistic is incredibly important to the game’s longevity. If it’s not realistic, you won’t play it for long. Look for realistic planes, airports, maps, and weather.
Second, find a simulator that will work smoothly with your computer. Don’t neglect this step. At one time I used an older computer only for playing my simulator and it wasn’t fun, mainly because the computer was old and not high powered enough to run the game. I didn’t want to install it on my work computer or family computer because I was afraid it might crash it (not uncommon for some games) and I’d lose vital information.
Last, you will need to make sure that the simulation comes with updates and support. If it doesn’t you might be paying an arm and a leg, just to keep the game up to date! I’m lucky enough to have found a flight simulator that gives me free updates for life! And, it even came with a 100% refund if I didn’t like it. Obviously I decided to keep it, since it gives me everything a good flight simulator should have.
