Become A Stronger Chess Player
Chess cannot be won without strategy. It is necessary to gain an advantage over the opponent quickly, considering comebacks are hard to come by in this game. Every player has their own ideas of the best way to play, but there are a couple strategies for each piece, that may seem basic, but will come in handy to remember.
The pawns are sometimes overlooked as valuable pieces and are the first to be sacrificed, but a smart player will understand the small victories they can offer and take advantage of them. There are actually several structures that will give full performance of the pawns, but there are three in particular that any beginner or advanced player will do well to remember. First, avoid splitting the pawns into isolated groups as they are strongest when they are in a chain. Second, hanging pawns, or individual isolated pawns, are virtually useless and tend to be a liability so try to avoid those for as a long as possible. Last, chain shapes that look like an upside-down V are stronger than chain shapes that look like a V.
Knights may seem rather powerless due to their strange movement configuration, but they can actually be quite powerful and useful. However, it’s best to utilize them to their fullest in the beginning and middle of the game because they loose their effectiveness as they board becomes more open. It’s best to keep them in play in the center of the board because they become weaker as they get closer to the sides. Complex and locked positions are quintessential to their play, so plan and asses each movement.
Bishops and their diagonal movements can be fairly beneficial. A player can decide whether to develop their play early or late in the game, each has its own advantages. Later development may result in hindered movements as the board will have gotten more congested, but even later development can be helpful near the end with the many diagonals that will be open.
Rooks can often be detrimental to an opponent when played strategically. Many opportunities of attack will arise when a rook, or even both, controls a open file. Some players view two rooks more powerful than their queen and will opt for their play, so that proves just how powerful rooks can be.
The strongest piece is undoubtedly the queen. It becomes even stronger when a minor piece is still around to assist with moves. The queen is given a lot of power, and it is meant to be utilized, but too vigorous of play can end in tragedy for the queen. Protection is key for the king and the castle move is best to be taken advantage of early. At the end, the king will have to come into play, but if possible avoid isolation. Keep the king close to other surviving pieces.
Chess is all about action and reaction. No game is ever played the same way and strategies must be adjusted to each game and to each opponent. However, the best strategy to always use, is to not play hastily or greedily. Smart, careful moves will lead to a win.
