Do Gaming Walkthrough Guides Spoil The Enjoyment?

When it comes to walkthrough guides I often wonder whether they should be used and this is not because I feel it is cheating but more to do with the fact that they must take away some of the enjoyment from playing the game. Surely you don’t get the same satisfaction from completing a game if you only did so because you followed instructions.

What kind of achievement does that give you? We spend a lot of money on these games but it seems we can’t wait to finish with them and buy something new – we forget that the real pleasure is in the journey and not in reaching the goal.

Gaming is really enjoyable when we have been stuck on a particular part of the game and then finally overcome it – this is what makes gaming so much fun. When we have a walkthrough guide there is no excuse to be stuck anywhere in the game – after all, all we have to do is follow the instructions. Sometimes I think that instead of buying the actual game, it would be better just to buy the guide and have a read of that. Or if this is how you want to play games, then you could always hope that they develop games that play themselves so you can just sit back and watch.

I am well aware of how tempting it can be to check out a guide if we are stuck in a game – we can get really frustrated and feel like packing in the game altogether. What harm could come from having a little look at a guide?

The problem is though that once we look at a walkthrough guide once we are going to want to do it again and again. But if you persevere with the game and keep trying then you will eventually work it out and this really does bring so much more pleasure and satisfaction.
